
Queen Latifah was born Dana Elaine Owens on March 18, 1970, in Newark, New Jersey. Latifah was the second daughter born to Lance and Rita Owens. She is most well-known for her political involvement, acting skills and ability to rhyme. At 8 years old, her Muslim cousin gave her the name Latifah which translates to "delicate" as well as "sensitive" in Arabic. Latifah began singing with the Shiloh Baptist Church's choir in Bloomfield, New Jersey. Her first performance was when she sang "Home" as the character of Dorothy in a production of The Wizard of Oz at St. Anne's Parochial School. Latifah's mother was a catalyst and she kept in touch with the students as well as the music. Mark James, the local disc jockey, was invited by Latifah to sing during the dance.
